Parash 9 Vayeshev (He continued living)

B’resheet/Genesis 37:1 to 40:23

Synopsis – Yosef/Joseph’s special mantle Coat, Yosef’s prophetic dreams, Yosef is sold into slavery by his brother’s because of jealousy.

Theme & MessageThe focus of this lesson is that when we persevere in the things of God, no matter how circumstances may appear, we can be certain we will receive the promises of God. This is an encouragement that in the face of adversity, those who follow God’s will are assured of the Lord’s presence with them. Even when it may seem that the Lord is far off.

TORAH LESSON - In spite of the favor of his father, his own brothers eliminated Yosef/Joseph from his family.  He was even taken away to a foreign land. Surely this must have seemed to Joseph to be an undeserved punishment. There was a clear danger presented to his life. Anything could happen to him outside the protective covering of his father’s house.  Yosef had another covering, even more protective than that of his earthly father.  Because Ya’akov/Jacob had been so diligent in teaching his son of the Lord’s commands, Yoseph was able to live according to God’s will even while being forced to live outside his father’s protection.  God the father was his protection now.

Even being sold into slavery could not take the Lord’s ways out of Yoseph’s heart. Yoseph did not become bitter, or angry.  There is not even a scripture that indicates Yoseph had fear! He was clearly different from all of the other slaves and rose to a place of honor.  He was given responsibilities and prominence in the Pharaoh’s palace.  This is a true sign of a believer following God’s ways instead of man’s ways.

As Yoseph is then falsely accused of a crime and sent to prison, it seems that the Lord may have forgotten him or perhaps failed him.  Once again a sign of the Lord’s presence is shown. Yoseph then rose to a place of honor even while in prison.  He was shown favor by the guards managing the prison, even given responsibilities and favors over the other prisoners.  Yoseph is able to correctly interpret the dreams of the baker and the cupbearer who were imprisoned with him.  A glimmer of hope presents as the cupbearer is released and has an opportunity to speak with favor to the Pharaoh about Yoseph.  Yet, even though Yoseph had spoken truth and encouragement, which was verified by the events that followed, the cupbearer went on to enjoy his freedom without showing any gratitude or even remembrance of Yoseph. Yoseph was gone so far and for so long, his own father believed he was dead.

FOUNDATION SCRIPTURE –

Gen 39:23  The keeper of the prison didn't look after anything that was under his hand, because the LORD was with him; and that which he did, the LORD made it prosper.

CHAPTER OVERVIEW –

GENESIS 37

In this chapter begins the history of Yoseph, with whom the remaining part of this book is chiefly concerned; and here are related the hatred of his brethren to him, because he brought an ill report of them to his father, and because his father loved him, and which was increased by the dream he dreamed, and told them of, Gen_37:1; a visit of his to his brethren in the fields, whom he found after a long search of them, Gen_37:12; their conspiracy on sight of him to slay him, but by the advice of Re’uven/Reuben it was agreed to cast him into a pit, which they did, Gen_37:18; and after that, at the motion of Yehudah/Judah, sold him to the Ishmaelites, who were going to Egypt, Gen_37:25; this being done, Re’uven being absent, and not finding Yoseph in the pit, was in great distress, Gen_37:29; their contrivance to deceive their father, and make him believe that Yoseph was destroyed by a wild beast, which on the sight of the coat he credited, and became inconsolable, Gen_37:31; and the chapter concludes with the sale of Yoseph in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, Gen_37:36.

GENESIS 38

This chapter is wholly taken up with matters relating to Yehudah/Judah, the fourth son of Ya’akov/Jacob, from whom the Jews have their name, and from whom Messiah sprung: it treats of his marriage with a Canaanitess, his children by her, their character and end, Gen_38:1; of his incest with his daughter-in-law, though unknown by him, Gen_38:12; of his resentment against her, when he heard she was with child, and his confusion when he found it was by himself, Gen_38:24; and of the birth of twins by her, named Pharez and Zarah, Gen_38:27.

GENESIS 39

In this chapter the history returns to Yoseph again, who being brought down to Egypt was sold to Potiphar, with whom he found favor, and who set him over his house, the Lord prospering everything in his hands, Gen_39:1; and being a young man of a comely aspect, his mistress lusted after him, and tempted him to lie with her from time to time, but he as constantly refused it, as being both ingratitude to his master, and a sin against God, Gen_39:7; at a certain time they being alone in the house, she renewed her solicitations, and laid hold on his garment (Mantle-Tallit), which he left in her hand and fled, Gen_39:11; upon which she called to her servants without, and accused Yoseph of an ill design upon her, and reported the same to her husband when he came home, Gen_39:13; upon which his master put him into prison, but he found favor also with the keeper of it, who committed the prisoners and all things relative to them into his hands, Gen_39:20.

GENESIS 40

The history of this chapter is, the imprisonment of two of Pharaoh's officers, his chief butler and chief baker, who by the captain of the guard were made the charge of Yoseph, Gen_40:1; they both dreamed in prison, which made them sad; Yoseph taking notice of their sadness, asked the reason of it, and encouraged them to tell him their dreams, Gen_40:5; the chief butler told his dream of the vine and three branches, which Joseph interpreted of his restoration to his office within three days, and desired him to remember him unto Pharaoh when he stood before him, telling him his case, Gen_40:9; then the chief baker told his dream of three white baskets of food on his head, which the birds ate, and this Yoseph interpreted of his being hanged within three days, Gen_40:16; and the events answered to the interpretation, but Joseph was forgot by the chief butler, Gen_40:20.

BRIT HADASHA LESSON - There is another figure in the Word who was betrayed by his own people.  He was sent away to foreigners to be destroyed. He was falsely accused of crime. He too spoke truth and encouragement to help people.  He too freed people from pain and death, but then was forgotten by those people soon afterward. He took responsibility over the poor, the lowly, and the captives. He too bore the signs of God’s favor and showed miraculous gifts that many people missed or ignored. He also drew the attention of some very prominent and powerful men in the government. Yet he was punished all the same.

Yeshua “Jesus” is his name. He was denied by the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Sanhedrin, the leaders of His own people (Mt20: 18). Leaders of the Jewish community took notice of Yeshua’s teaching and anointing (Yochanan/John 3) He was betrayed by His own disciples (Mk 14:18). He was sent away to the Romans to be executed even after speaking truth and love. Even after performing miraculous signs and wonders and healing so many people. He was forgotten even by those he had healed, including a group of lepers (Lk 17:12-19).  The people saw Yeshua’s earthly body die on the cross and buried. Even His disciples were in despair over His death in spite of what He had taught them about His return (Mk 14:28).

TODAY’S TEMPLE Read Hebrews 10:19 - 39.  As those who have the temple of the living God within us, we should live our lives each day as examples of excellence as Yoseph did. Our actions and our words should reflect the Word of God guiding our every step. When we behave in this way, those around us will soon notice that we are different from everyone else. By the power of God’s word we will rise to the top in leadership, academics, trustworthiness, or endurance.  Once people see the difference in a disciple of the Lord, the doors open for us to share the Gospel to others. When they begin to ask questions, be prepared to answer them from the Word.

As today’s disciples of Yeshua we should be encouraged by the life of Yoseph and, more importantly, by the example of Yeshua.  Yeshua, as God, became the suffering servant submitting to His Father’s plan, to save all of mankind.
