Parash 18 Mishpatim (Judgments) Sh’mot/Exodus 21:1 – 24:18
Synopsis – Following the revelation at Sinai, Adonai legislates a series of laws for the people of Israel. These include the laws of the indentured servant; the penalties for murder, kidnapping, assault, and theft; civil laws pertaining to redress of damages, the granting of loans, and the responsibilities of the "Four Guardians"; and the rules governing the conduct of justice by courts of law.
Also included are laws warning against mistreatment of the Goyim foreigners; the observance of the seasonal festivals, and the agricultural gifts that are to be brought to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem; the prohibition against cooking meat with milk; and the mitzvah of prayer. Altogether, the Parshah of Mishpatim contains fifty-three mitzvot -- 23 imperative commandments and 30 prohibitions.
Adonai promises to bring the people of Israel to the Holy Land, and warns them against assuming the pagan ways of its current inhabitants.
The people of Israel proclaim, "We will do and we will hear all that God commands us." Leaving Aaron and Hur in charge in the Israelite camp, Moshe ascends Mount Sinai and remains there for forty days and forty nights to receive the Torah from God.
Theme & Message – The focus of this portion of the Torah is that of the God of Covenants. The Lord has specific requirements for entering into a covenant with Him. The most important of which is the sealing of THE COVENANT IN BLOOD. He also is very specific in giving the details of the blessings that will come if the covenant is maintained. Related to this keeping of promises, this lesson also reveals that the Lord knows the weaknesses of the flesh that hinder us from keeping our promises. The loving God shows us that He has always had a plan to give us help to keep the covenant.

TORAH LESSON – This portion of the Torah begins with Moshe/Moses receiving the first of the commandments (Mitzvoh) of the Law. The wide array of commands is amazing as the Lord gives direction for nearly every aspect of family and community life on earth. The law makes clear the responsibility we carry for our actions in every day life. The Lord makes it very clear that every life and even every part of every person’s life has a value that cannot be denied or destroyed. This portion contains the much quoted command that if two quarreling men fight and injure a pregnant woman who gives premature birth, there must be payment taken” an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. The Lord teaches that slavery is only a permanent status if the person chooses to serve ;otherwise, the seventh year is to be the year he is set free. Not what was misunderstood by the American’s that lived in the south part of the USA before the Civil War. The law strongly protects women slaves from the owners taking advantage of their subordinate status. The law delineates specific details regarding careful stewardship of property and animals. The Lord is careful to describe protections for orphans, widows, women and the poor as part of the law.
Very importantly, the Lord gives instructions regarding His appointed times (Moadeem). The Lord gives instruction that the seventh day is to be a Sabbath for all the people living among the Hebrews; even the slaves or foreigners living with them. The Lord also speaks about the Shabbat/Sabbath Year, the seventh year as a year of freedom and even a year of rest for the land. The Lord ends this portion of the Law with instructions for the Moadeem (Appointed Feasts). The Pesach (Passover) and the Feast of Unleavened Bread is the first appointed feast of the year. No leavening is to be found in any food or in any house of the people of the covenant. The Second is the Feast of Matzah. The Third is the Feast of Yom HaBikkurim, or First fruits in which the first of the early spring harvest is brought and dedicated to the Lord. The fourth, the Feast of Sukkot, the Harvest, The Ingathering, or Tabernacles, is the gathering of the harvest and bringing the fruits before the Lord in thanksgiving. All the men are commanded to come before the Lord in the place where He chooses at these three times of the year.
The Lord describes the powerful Angel of the Lord who will walk before the Israelites and show the way they should go. This angel has the Lord’s name on Him. Sh’mot (Exodus)23:21-21. This angel was H4317 מיכאל mîykâ'êl BDB Definition: Michael = “who is like God”. Israel is commanded to obey what He says and not to provoke Him with sin because He will not tolerate sin and because the Lord’s name is in Him. Moshe/Moses writes all the Word spoken by God. The Lord speaks of the blessings that will come if the commandments are followed. The Lord will fight all of the Israelite’s enemies. The Promised Land would be cleared of enemies and the land would flow with crops and water abundantly. The people would be protected from illnesses. Moses builds an altar to the Lord surrounded by 12 pillars representing the 12 tribes. The covenant is sealed as the people are sprinkled with blood
The portions closes as Moses, Aaron, Nadav and Avihu and the seventy elders go up the mountain and actually see the God of Israel; they even eat and drink in His presence. Finally, Moshe/Moses ascends the mountain of the Lord to receive the complete Law including the stone tablets on which the Lord had written the Ten Commandments. Moshe/Moses spends forty days and forty nights on the mountain surrounded by the cloud and fire of the glory of the Lord. He had left Aaron and Chur in charge over the people in his absence.
Exo 24:1 He said to Moshe, "Come up to the LORD, you, and Aharon, Nadav, and Avihu, and seventy of the elders of Yisra'el; and worship from a distance.
Exo 24:2 Moshe alone shall come near to the LORD, but they shall not come near, neither shall the people go up with him."
What do the four names mean? What does it say in an English sentence?
Drawn from the water the light bearer is generous and is your Father.
He took the book of the covenant and read it in the hearing of the people, and they said, "All that the LORD has spoken will we do, and be obedient." Moshe took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, "Look, this is the blood of the covenant, which the LORD has made with you concerning all these words."Then Moshe, Aharon, Nadav, Avihu, and seventy of the elders of Yisra'el went up They saw the God of Yisra'el. Under his feet was like a paved work of sappir stone, like the skies for clearness. He didn't lay his hand on the nobles of the children of Yisra'el. They saw God, and ate and drank. Sh’mot (Exodus) 24:7
Sh’mot/Exodus 21 -
The laws recorded in this chapter relate to the fifth and sixth commandments; and though they are not accommodated to our constitution, especially in point of servitude, nor are the penalties annexed binding on us, yet they are of great use for the explanation of the moral law, and the rules of natural justice. Here are several enlargements,
I. Upon the fifth commandment, which concerns particular relations. 1. The duty of masters towards their Slaves (servants), their men-servants (Exo_21:2-6), and the maidservants (Exo_21:7-11). 2. The punishment of disobedient children that strike their parents (Exo_21:15), or curse them (Exo_21:17).
II. Upon the sixth commandment, which forbids all violence offered to the person of a man. Here is, 1. Concerning murder (Exo_21:12-14). 2. Man-stealing (Exo_21:16). 3. Assault and battery (Exo_21:18, Exo_21:19). 4. Correcting a servant (Exo_21:20, Exo_21:21). 5. Hurting a woman with child (Exo_21:22, Exo_21:23). 6. The law of retaliation (Exo_21:24, Exo_21:25). 7. Maiming a servant (Exo_21:26, Exo_21:27). 8. An ox goring (Exo_21:28-32). 9. Damage by opening a pit (Exo_21:33, Exo_21:34). 10. Cattle fighting (Exo_21:35, Exo_21:36).
Slavery was a big problem in the United States during our beginning stages. Slavery was propergated by so called followers of Christ. Right there is the problem. If you don’t know His real name you begin to wonder off the path. If those people had even read Sh’mot 21:2 they would have seen what God thought of the slave and how long you could keep that personas a slave. The person has the right after 6 years to stay or go. Not the man master.
Verse 12: the difference between murder & Killing. Murder is thought out. The other is an accident.
Verse 15: attacking a parent. We see this all the time in our society today. I think we should return to these rules. But it is also up to the parent to be following these rules.
Verse 24: Eye for Eye. This is a great rule. When everyone is playing by the same rules it keeps everyone in line.
Sh’mot/Exodus 22 -
The laws of this chapter relate,
I. To the eighth commandment, concerning theft (Exo_22:1-4), trespass by cattle (Exo_22:5), damage by fire (Exo_22:6), trusts (Exo_22:7-13), borrowing cattle (Exo_22:14, Exo_22:15), or money (Exo_22:25-27).
II. To the seventh commandment. Against fornication (Exo_22:16, Exo_22:17), bestiality (Exo_22:19).
III. To the first table, forbidding witchcraft (Exo_22:18), idolatry (Exo_22:20). Commanding to offer the Shavuot (Firstfruits) (Exo_22:29, Exo_22:30).
IV. To the poor (Exo_22:21-24).
V. To the civil government (Exo_22:28).
VI. To the peculiarity of the Jewish nation (Exo_22:31) and those engrafted to her.
Verse 2: breaking and entering at night. Evil things happen at night under the cover of darkness. The lord allows you to protect yourself and your family from those who are the demons of the night.
Verse 16: The seduction of the virgin. Stealing something so precious to all of us. This is what is happening to our children today. Older men stackers steeling something that is precious to the Lord.
Verse 18: what God thinks when you go to taroh cards readers or other such evil things.
Verse 21: How the Lord loves the widow and the orphan. What He will do to those who mistreat widows and orphans.
Sh’mot/Exodus 23 -
This chapter continues and concludes the acts that passed in the first session (if I may so call it) upon mount Sinai. Here are,
I. Some laws of universal obligation, relating especially to the ninth commandment, against bearing false witness (Exo_23:1), and giving false judgment (Exo_23:2, Exo_23:3, Exo_23:6-8). Also a law of doing good to our enemies (Exo_23:4, Exo_23:5), and not oppressing Goyim (strangers) (Exo_23:9).
II. The sabbatical year (Exo_23:10, Exo_23:11), The three times Adonai Commands all His men to be in Jerusalem for the annual feasts (Exo_23:14-17), with some laws pertaining thereto.
III. Gracious promises of the completing of the mercy God had begun for them, upon condition of their obedience. That God would conduct them through the wilderness (Exo_23:20-24), that he would prosper all they had (Exo_23:25, Exo_23:26), that he would put them in possession of Canaan (Exo_23:27-31). But they must not mingle themselves with the nations (Exo_23:32, Exo_23:33).
Verse 19: The only Kosher law that does not pertain to a type of animal. Food preparation. No other law from God exists in how to cook the meal.
Verse 26: the promise from Adonai to women of not miscarrying children if they follow the Lords rules.
Sh’mot/Exodus 24 -
Moshe, as mediator between Adonai and Israel, having received divers laws and ordinances from God privately in the three foregoing chapters, in this chapter,
I. Comes down to the people, acquaints them with the laws he had received, and takes their consent to those laws (Exo_24:3), writes the laws, and reads them to the people, who repeat their consent (Exo_24:4-7), and then by sacrifice, and the sprinkling of blood, ratifies the covenant between them and God (Exo_24:5, Exo_24:6, Exo_24:8).
II. He returns to God again, to receive further directions. When he was dismissed from his former attendance, he was ordered to attend again (Exo_24:1, Exo_24:2). He did so with seventy of the elders, to whom God made a discovery of his glory (Exo_24:9-11). Moshe is ordered up into the mount (Exo_24:12, Exo_24:13); the rest are ordered down to the people (Exo_24:14). The cloud of glory is seen by all the people on the top of Mount Sinai (Exo_24:15-17), and Moses is therewith God forty days and forty nights (Exo_24:18).
Verse 3: Exo 24:3 Moshe came and told the people everything Adonai had said, including all the rulings. The people answered with one voice: "We will obey every word Adonai has spoken."
The people agreed. In the crowd was not only the Hebrew but also the Goyim living among them. So this Commitment to Adonai was not only coming from Israel but from the nations.
BRIT HADASHA/New Testament LESSON – The entire account of the Lord freeing the Israelites from Egyptian slavery and leading the people into the promised land is a foreshadow, or a picture of the Lord’s plan of salvation for the entire world. From the account, we can learn about our Heavenly Father as He introduces himself to the Israelites after they had been separated from Him for nearly 400 years.
Yeshua began His ministry by choosing to reveal Himself to His chosen disciples. Yeshua specifically designated 70 elder disciples for outreaches and ministry. (Yochanan/John 14:22)(Luke 10:1)(Mattiyahu/Mat 10:1-4) He spent time with them and displayed His power and miracles (Acts 2:22) (Yochanan/John 2:11,23)(Yochanan/John 4:48)(Yochanan/John 20:30). He sat with them teaching them all they would need to know (Mat 11:1, 22:16)(Mark 8:31)(Luke 1:11)(Yochanan/John 14:26, 15:14-17). He clearly reviewed the terms of the agreement they would need to enter into willingly (Mattiyahu/Mat 10:38,16:24)(Mattiyahu/John 3:3); clearly spelling out the expectations, (Mattiyahu/Mat 20:22-23) but also the blessings and promises (Luke 20:30, 22:29-30)(Yochanan/John 12:26, 14:12).(Mat 6:33)
He taught them the heart of the Law (Mattiyahu/Mat 15:17-20) (Mat 5:21-24)(Luke 4:32). He spoke about His love and respect for the Law written by His Father (Yochanan/John 12:49-50)(Mat 5:17-19) (Mat15: 6-9). Yeshua was very specific about showing the disciples how he valued each life (Luke 15:4-7)(Yochanan/John 15:13). He demonstrated His love for the children (Mat 19:14), the widows (Luke 7:12-14)(Mark 12:42-44) and the orphans (Yochanan/John 14:18) (Ya’akov/James 1:27). Yeshua/Jesus declared Himself to be the Lord of the Sabbath (Mat 12:8) (Mat 11:29). Yeshua taught extensively about the meaning of freedom in God’s Kingdom (Luke 6:37) (Yochanan/John 8:32-36). He taught that sin was true slavery and that freedom could only be achieved in truth and knowledge of Him (Yochanan/John 8:36). Yeshua showed us that by freely choosing to be a servant of the Lord, we can bring life to ourselves, our family and to others around us.(Luke 22:25-28) (Mat 24:45-47)
Yeshua/Jesus followed every prescribed statute regarding the holy Feast days as given to Moses on Mt. Sinai. He followed God’s laws because He loved His father. He asked the disciples to follow the commandments out of love, not as a job or chore. (Yochanan/John14: 15)(Yochanan/John 8: 29, 42) He participated in the feasts at Jerusalem as every other Jewish man of that time. (Luke 2:41)(Yochanan/John 2:13) Not only did he follow the requirements of the feasts, he lived out each of the feasts through his ministry, his death and resurrection. . He entered into Jerusalem as the Lamb of God on the prescribed day the Pesach lambs were being brought to the homes of all Jewish men. (Mark 11:11) (1Co 5:7) He was slain as the Perfect Lamb as the Pesach lambs were sacrificed (Mark 14:12). He rose from the dead as the first to conquer death on the Yom HaBikkurim, the day of first fruits (1Cor 15:20). He declared Himself to be the source of living waters at the temple during Sukkot/Tabernacles (John 7:2, 7:37). Now we await the end of the great Harvest for His return to celebrate with thanksgiving the Feast of Sukkot/Tabernacles (Mettiyahu/Mat 9:37)
Finally, Yeshua explained to the disciples that anyone who had been with Him and received Him as God’s son, had already seen the Father in Him(Yochanan/John 14:9). He sat and ate and drank with the disciples on many occasions. The most significant of those meals was His last Pesach with them (Luke 22:15). Yeshua poured out His blood as a sacrifice to protect the world from sin and death, according to the law of His father (Mat 26:28) (Kefa Aleph/1Peter 1:2). This was to be blood covenant between Yeshua and man to give life. Just as the leaders of Israel watched Moses ascend the mountain to be with the Lord, the disciples were with Yeshua the day he was transformed by His Father (Mat 17:1-6). He ascended to be with His Father in Heaven. (Yochanan/John 13:1, 20:17))(Mat 28:7)
Still knowing that we would need help, Yeshua promised that after the resurrection, He would send us that help in the form of the Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit). Yeshua promised he was going ahead to prepare for us a place in Heaven for eternity. Yeshua also promised that He would return again to the earth. The Word teaches us to watch and wait for the signs of His return (Mat 24). The Word teaches us that He will again set himself down on a mountain – this time it will be the Mount of Olives. (Zec 14:4). Yeshua promises that, in the end of days, He will once again dine with men, but only with those He has counted as trusted friends who have followed His teachings (Rev 3:20) We will see him come in a cloud, just as His father appeared to the Israelites in a cloud (Mat 24:30), (Mar 13:26). Those who follow Yeshua and all that He has taught us will go to be with Him forever (1Th 4: 17)
TODAY’S TEMPLE – Read Mattiyahu/Matthew 26 As a priest who has the temple of the living God within us, we need to be knowledgeable about the Word of God. We need to be ready to help other to understand the Word of God and to be ready to help others to apply the Word in their own lives. Yeshua fulfilled the Law written by the Father because He loved His father very much. Yeshua said, “I always do that which pleases my Father in Heaven”. The thirty pieces of silver taken by Judas fulfilled the Law so that an alien among the Israelites could partake of the blessings of the Pesach. In other words, the Gentiles became able to enjoy the blessings of forgiveness and eternal life because all of the Law had been followed to the letter. The Law of God states that there is no forgiveness of sin without the spilling of blood and that a covenant was not sealed until the blood was sprinkled. Yeshua had such love and respect for the laws written by His Father that He carefully followed all of them to ensure our freedom to be in eternity with Him. As servants and priests of the Kingdom of God, we need to know and to love the commandments as Yeshua did. In this way, we can help others and lead others to know the great blessings and promises in that kingdom for eternity.
As today’s Talmidim/disciples of Yeshua/Jesus we are to learn through the example of Moshe/Moses and the ancient Hebrews. We must keep God’s commandments in our hearts and live our lives accordingly. Yeshua/Jesus walks with those who believe so that He is always beside them to show God’s ways. Yeshua is the one who has gone before us to prepare a place for us. After we receive the Yeshua into our hearts, we are transformed into His likeness and made into a new creation. We are being prepared by God to make ready the way for Yeshua’s return.
