Parash 21 Ki Tisa (When you take) Sh’mot/ Exodus 30:11-34:35

Synopsis The people of Israel are told to each contribute exactly half a shekel of silver to the Sanctuary. Instructions are also given regarding the making of the Sanctuary's water-basin, anointing oil and incense. "Wise hearted" artisans Betzalel and Ahaliav are placed in charge of the Sanctuary's construction, and the people are once again commanded to keep the Shabbat.

When Moses does not return when expected from Mount Sinai, the people make a Golden Calf and worship it. God proposes to destroy the errant nation, but Moses intercedes on their behalf. Moses descends from the mountain carrying the Tablets of the Testimony engraved with the Ten Commandments; seeing the people dancing about their idol, he breaks the Tablets, destroys the Golden Calf and has the primary culprits put to death. He then returns to God to say: "If You do not forgive them, blot me out from the book that You have written."

God forgives, but says that the effect of their sin will be felt for many generations. At first God proposes to send His angel along with them, but Moses insists that God Himself accompany His people to the Promised Land.

Moses prepares a new set of tablets and once more ascends the mountain, where God reinscribes the covenant on these Second Tablets. On the mountain Moses is also granted a vision of the divine Thirteen Attributes of Mercy. So radiant is Moses' face upon his return, that he must cover it with a veil, which he removes only to speak with God and to teach His laws to the people.

Chapters:

Sh’mot/ Exodus 30 -

Moshe is, in this chapter, further instructed,

I.                   Concerning the altar of incense (Exo_30:1-10).

II.                Concerning the ransom-money which the Israelites were to pay, when they were numbered (Exo_30:11-16).

III.             Concerning the laver of brass, which was set for the priests to wash in (Exo_30:17-21).

IV.              Concerning the making up of the anointing oil and the use of it (Exo_30:22-33).

V.                 Concerning the incense and perfume which were to be burned on the golden altar (Exo_30:34, etc.).

Exo 30:14  Everyone over twenty years of age who is subject to the census is to give this offering to Adonai —

The Lord counted you for His service at the age of 20 and not before. This is why in today’s world when we send children out into the mission field in foreign countries many children fall away afterward. We as a body need to follow the masters rules.

Verse 20:Why the Cohen would wash before serving Adonai; Man entrusts his soul [to God at night] tired and exhausted, and G-d restores it to him rejuvenated and refreshed so that he may serve his Creator with all his capacity, this being the purpose of man. Therefore we should sanctify ourselves with His holiness and wash our hands with water from a vessel before serving Him and ministering to Him, like the Kohen who would wash his hands from the Basin each day before beginning his service...

Sh’mot/ Exodus 31 -

God is here drawing towards a conclusion of what he had to say to Moshe upon the mount, where he had now been with him forty days and forty nights; and yet no more is recorded of what was said to him in all that time than what we have read in the six chapters foregoing. In this,

I.                   He appoints what workmen should be employed in the building and furnishing of the tabernacle (Exo_31:1-11).

II.                He repeats the law of the SHABBAT (Sabbath), and the religious observance of it (Exo_31:12-17).

III.             He delivers to him the two tables of the testimony at parting (Exo_31:18).

Exo 31:12  Adonai said to Moshe,

Exo 31:13  "Tell the people of Isra'el, 'You are to observe my Shabbats; for this is a sign between me and you through all your generations; so that you will know that I am Adonai, who sets you apart for me.

Exo 31:14  Therefore you are to keep my Shabbat, because it is set apart for you. Everyone who treats it as ordinary must be put to death; for whoever does any work on it is to be cut off from his people.

Exo 31:15  On six days work will get done; but the seventh day is Shabbat, for complete rest, set apart for Adonai. Whoever does any work on the day of Shabbat must be put to death.

Exo 31:16  The people of Isra'el are to keep the Shabbat, to observe Shabbat through all their generations as a perpetual covenant.

Who said this in verse 13? God did. Who’s house does the goyim get engrafted into when they get saved? The Hebrew olive tree. So is this passage for them, yes.

The word in Hebrew used for perpetual is H5769  עלם  /  עולם  ‛ôlâm BDB Definition: 1) long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, world

Sh’mot/ Exodus 32 -

It is a very lamentable interruption which the story of this chapter gives to the record of the establishment of God’s Chosen body, and faith among the chosen people. Things went on admirably well towards that happy settlement: God had shown himself very favorable, and the people also had seemed to be pretty tractable. Moshe had now almost completed his forty days upon the mount, and, we may suppose, was pleasing himself with the thoughts of the very joyful welcome he should have to the camp of Israel at his return, and the speedy setting up of the tabernacle among them. But, behold, the measures are broken, the sin of Israel turns away those good things from them, and puts a stop to the current of God's favors; the sin that did the mischief (would you think it?) was worshipping a golden calf. The marriage was ready to be solemnized between God and Israel, but Israel plays the harlot, and so the match is broken, and it will be no easy matter to piece it again. Here is,

I.                   The sin of Israel, and of Aaron particularly, in making the golden calf for a god (Exo_32:1-4), and worshipping it (Exo_32:5, Exo_32:6).

II.                The notice which God gave of this to Moshe, who was now in the mount with him (Exo_32:7, Exo_32:8), and the sentence of his wrath against them (Exo_32:9, Exo_32:10).

III.             The intercession which Moses immediately made for them in the mount (Exo_32:11-13), and the prevalency of that intercession (Exo_32:14).

IV.              His coming down from the mount, when he became an eye-witness of their idolatry (Exo_32:15-19), in abhorrence of which, and as an expression of just indignation, he broke the tables (Exo_32:19), and burnt the golden calf (Exo_32:20).

V.                 The examination of Aaron about it (Exo_32:21-24).

VI.              Execution done upon the ring-leaders in the idolatry (Exo_32:25-29).

VII.           The further intercession Moses made for them, to turn away the wrath of God from them (Exo_32:30-32), and a reprieve granted thereupon, reserving them for a further reckoning (Exo_32:33, etc.).

Exo 32:4  He received what they gave him, melted it down, and made it into the shape of a calf. They said, "Isra'el! Here is your god, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!"

H5695 עגל  ‛êgel BDB Definition: 1) calf, bull-calf

An understanding of the Apis bull will help us understand why Israel worshipped the golden calf in the desert of Sinai. The example before us is a small representation of what must have been a larger representation of the Apis ...

The Apis was considered the animal manifestation of the god Ptah of Memphis (the ancient capital of Egypt). The bullish characteristics of virility, fertility, strength and aggressiveness are depicted in Apis. He represented also the River Nile and Hapy, the god of inundation (or flooding of the Nile), essential for the fertility of the land. Only one living Apis bull can be represented at any time. The Apis bull was revered like the king. When it died, it became Osiris, the god of the dead. At Sakkara, there is a necropolis (cemetery) for more than a hundred Apis bulls. Upon the death of the Apis bull, the priests of Memphis scoured the country for the reincarnation of the dead Apis bull. This must be a new-born calf with a white triangle on his forehead. Other indications also needed to be present. Then the new Apis bull was brought in triumphal procession to the Apis House, a magnificent temple located in Memphis, where worshippers would come and view the live Apis bull as it stood at a special window dressed in royal bull attire. this continued for about eighteen years until the death of the Apis bull and the cycle would start all over again. So powerful was the Cult of the Apis that it continued into Hellenistic times as the Cult of Serapis.

In the biblical account, Exodus 32:4-5, the Israelites reverted to their Egyptian superstitions when Moses stayed too long on Mt Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments from God. They worshipped an Apis bull with much debauchery and Moses made the offenders drink the powderised remains of the Apis bull statue which they had worshipped.

In Jeremiah 46:15 the word "warriors" (NIV) or "valiant men" (KJV) is leterally in Hebrew "strong ones" and it is the same word used in Isaiah 34:7 (and other passages) for "bulls". The sense here is: "Why did your Apis bulls fall? Why could they not stand? Because the LORD push them down.:

Hundreds of years later, Kng Jeroboam wanted to maintain his independence from Judea and set up two golden Apis bulls in the northern kingdom of Israel (1 Kings 12:28-29).

The rabbis of old spoke of the three greatest tragedies in Israel: when Adam adn Eve ate the forbidden fruit, when Israel worshipped the golden calf, and when the Tanach (the Old Testament) was translated into Greek!.

Verse:11-14 shows us that prayer and patittions to the Lord can change His mind. Moshes petitions the Lord and the lord does not destroy the people.

Verse: 15 Exo 32:15  Moshe turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets inscribed on both sides, on the front and on the back.

The first set of commitments were on both sides of the tablets. The second set does not say the same.

Verse:18 we now fully understand that the people were dancing and singing to the pagan god.

Thousands of dead fish found in Sea of Galilee

Feb 16, 2008, 16:16 GMT

Tel Aviv - More than 10,000 dead fish have been found in the biblical Sea of Galilee in northern Israel.

Health officials said the fish appear to have been deliberately poisoned. The freshwater lake was closed for fishing.

Israeli health authorities expect the results of initial laboratory tests on Sunday.

Exo 32:20  Seizing the calf they had made, he melted it in the fire and ground it to powder, which he scattered on the water. Then he made the people of Isra'el drink it.

The fish have everything to do with God’s order. How the people wanted to worship other gods. The people were not under the Law at the time of this event, they were under grace.

Exo 32:26  Moshe stood at the entrance to the camp and shouted, "Whoever is for Adonai, come to me!" All the descendants of Levi rallied around him.

Exo 32:27  He told them, "Here is what Adonai, the God of Isra'el, says: 'Each of you, put his sword on his side; and go up and down the camp, from gate to gate; and every man is to kill his own kinsman, his own friend and his own neighbor!"

Exo 32:28  The sons of Levi did what Moshe said, and that day three thousand of the people died.

3000 people died because they refused to follow the Lords rules and regulations. They were under grace. See Brit Hadasha reading

Sh’mot/ Exodus 33 -

In this chapter we have a further account of the mediation of Moshe between God and Israel, for the making up of the breach that sin had made between them.

I.                   He brings a very humbling message from God to them (Exo_33:1-3, Exo_33:5), which has a good effect upon them, and helps to prepare them for mercy (Exo_33:4, Exo_33:6).

II.                He settles a correspondence between God and them, and both God and the people signify their approbation of that correspondence, God by descending in a cloudy pillar, and the people by worshipping at the tent doors (Exo_33:7-11).

III.             He is earnest with God in prayer, and prevails,  1. For a promise of his presence with the people (Exo_33:12-17).  2. For a sight of his glory for himself (Exo_33:18, etc.).

Exo 33:10  When all the people saw the column of cloud stationed at the entrance to the tent, they would get up and prostrate themselves, each man at his tent door.

Exo 33:11  Adonai would speak to Moshe face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then he would return to the camp; but the young man who was his assistant, Y'hoshua the son of Nun, never left the inside of the tent.

H3091  יהושׁע  /  יהושׁוּע  yehôshûa‛ BDB Definition: Joshua or Jehoshua = “Jehovah is salvation”

H5126  נון  /  נוּן  nûn  /  nôn  BDB Definition: Nun = “fish” or “posterity”

Exo 33:12  Moshe said to Adonai , "Look, you say to me, 'Make these people move on!' But you haven't let me know whom you will be sending with me. Nevertheless you have said, 'I know you by name,' and also, 'You have found favor in my sight.'

Exo 33:13  Now, please, if it is really the case that I have found favor in your sight, show me your ways; so that I will understand you and continue finding favor in your sight. Moreover, keep on seeing this nation as your people."

Moshe asks the Lord to revel to him what makes the Lord happy so that he can kept doing it.

Sh’mot/ Exodus 34 -

God having in the foregoing chapter intimated to Moshe his reconciliation to Israel, here gives proofs of it, proceeding to settle his covenant and communion with them. Four instances of the return of his favor we have in this chapter: -

I.                   The orders he gives to Moshe to come up to the mount, the next morning, and bring two tables of stone with him (Exo_34:1-4).

II.                His meeting him there, and the proclamation of his name (Exo_34:5-9).

III.             The instructions he gave him there, and his converse with him for forty days together, without intermission (v. 10-28).

IV.              The honor he put upon him when he sent him down with his face shining (Exo_34:29-35). In all this God dealt with Moshe as a public person, and mediator between him and Israel, and a type of the great Mediator.

Verse:17-26 The Lord specifies what days are to be set apart to Him. What days and times all those who are part of the house of Israel are to observe and be committed to. The Lord states that the people should destroy all the idols and other things gods so that they do not get tempted by them.

THE CONTRACT

Exo 34:27  Adonai said to Moshe, "Write these words down, because they are the terms of the covenant I have made with you and with Isra'el."

These are the words from ADONAI choose this day whom you serve!

BRIT HADASHA LESSON –

Gold Nugget from Sh’mot 30:11

Mat 20:25  But Yeshua called them and said, "You know that among the Goyim, those who are supposed to rule them become tyrants, and their superiors become dictators.

Mat 20:26  Among you, it must not be like that. On the contrary, whoever among you wants to be a leader must become your servant,

Mat 20:27  and whoever wants to be first must be your slave!

Mat 20:28  For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve — and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Gold Nugget from Sh’mot 32:28

Act 2:34  For David did not ascend into heaven. But he says,

Act 2:35  'Adonai said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." '

Act 2:36  Therefore, let the whole house of Isra'el know beyond doubt that God has made him both Lord and Messiah — this Yeshua, whom you executed on a stake!"

Act 2:37  On hearing this, they were stung in their hearts; and they said to Kefa and the other emissaries, "Brothers, what should we do?"

Act 2:38  Kefa answered them, "Turn from sin, return to God, and each of you be immersed on the authority of Yeshua the Messiah into forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Ruach HaKodesh!

Act 2:39  For the promise is for you, for your children, and for those far away — as many as Adonai our God may call!"

Act 2:40  He pressed his case with many other arguments and kept pleading with them, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation!"

Act 2:41  So those who accepted what he said were immersed, and there were added to the group that day about three thousand people.

Act 2:42  They continued faithfully in the teaching of the emissaries, in fellowship, in breaking bread and in the prayers.

Act 2:43  Everyone was filled with awe, and many miracles and signs took place through the emissaries.

Act 2:44  All those trusting in Yeshua stayed together and had everything in common;
